Introduction
In August 2022, our team traveled to Noida for the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2022, held at Galgotias University. We were tasked with solving the problem statement: "To build a virtual laboratory system for school students." After five intense days of brainstorming and hard work, we developed a VR and AR-based solution aimed at revolutionizing education for students.
Our system allows students to experience real-time, interactive laboratory environments from the comfort of their homes or classrooms, helping bridge the gap in practical learning. With cutting-edge technology, we built a solution that made learning engaging and hands-on through virtual and augmented reality.
Key Features
- VR Headset and Haptic Glove Controller: Custom-built hardware to create a more immersive experience for students.
- 3D Virtual Laboratories: Three detailed 3D models of instruments and machines for various science experiments.
- Personal Lab Assistant: In-built assistant to guide students through experiments and provide real-time feedback.
- Progress Tracking Tablet: A personalized tablet interface for students to track their learning progress.
- Wake Word and Speech Recognition: Voice-activated control for hands-free interaction within the virtual lab.
- AR Hand and Finger Tracking: Augmented reality-based tracking for more interactive engagement with virtual objects.
Benefits
- Improves student engagement by providing a hands-on, immersive learning experience.
- Reduces barriers to practical learning by enabling students to perform virtual experiments safely and effectively.
- Helps in understanding complex scientific concepts by visualizing and interacting with 3D models of lab instruments and machines.
- Enhances accessibility for students in remote or under-resourced areas who may not have access to physical laboratories.
